Scientists Investigate Severity And Spread Of New H1N1 Swine Flu Virus
Published July 3, 2009, 5:11 am, Medical News Today
Scientists in the US and the Netherlands discovered what most doctors already suspected: the new H1N1 swine flu virus causes more severe infection than seasonal flu, but the two groups disagreed on how easily it spreads, with one finding that it spreads easily while the other finding it does not. The two studies are published in the 2 July online issue of Science.

Studies: Novel H1N1 affects deep lung tissue, transmits fairly well
Published July 2, 2009, 7:38 pm, Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy
Jul 2, 2009 (CIDRAP News) – The novel H1N1 (swine) influenza now circling the globe causes more serious lung disease than seasonal flu strains and sheds from the lung and throat tissue where it reproduces at higher rates, according to two animal studies published today—findings that could explain autopsies and case reports of severe pneumonia as well as the virus's rapid spread.
Research Shows Possibility Of Vaccine For Ear Infections
Published July 1, 2009, 5:23 am, Medical News Today
Otitis media, more commonly known as an ear infection, is the most frequently diagnosed illness in children less than 15 years of age in the United States and is the primary cause for emergency room visits. In the first article, Elliott and colleagues (SEE ARTICLE) report the association of C-reactive protein (CRP) gene variants with CRP levels and coronary heart disease risk.
Scientists Map Genome For Parasite Causing Widespread Infections
Published June 30, 2009, 3:07 am, Medical News Today
Scientists at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research (SFBR) in San Antonio have for the first time constructed a genetic map of the parasite that causes schistosomiasis, a chronic intestinal infection that can damage internal organs and, in children, impair growth and cognitive development. Schistosome parasites are flatworms that infect more than 200 million people a year worldwide.

- Scientists link influenza A (H1N1) susceptibility to common levels of arsenic exposure. Woods Hole, MA, USA. May 20, 2009: Study shows the immune response to influenza A (H1N1) infection is significantly minimized by a low level of arsenic exposure that may occur through drinking contaminated well water. Mexico has large areas of very high arsenic levels in their well water, which may explain why the same H1N1 virus caused severe illness in Mexico and mild illness in other countries.
